Transforming a Coastal Home with Native Beauty

Castaways Beach, QLD

  • "After years of fast-paced living in Singapore and Sydney, we're seeking a lifestyle change that prioritizes quality time with family and friends. This property represents our desire to escape the city and reconnect with nature."

  • To create a low-maintenance, native garden that complements the coastal architecture of the existing home, providing a serene and sustainable outdoor space.

"We envision a relaxed and 'wild' garden that complements the coastal setting. While we want a welcoming and uncluttered space, we also desire a sense of privacy and protection."

  • The design sought to create a relaxed coastal atmosphere by incorporating native plants and natural materials. To minimize maintenance, drought-tolerant species were chosen. The garden was thoughtfully planned to complement the home's architecture, ensuring a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

    Key elements included:

Native Plant Selection: A variety of native Australian plants, including banksias, westringias, casuarinas, lomandra, and themeda, were chosen for their beauty, sustainability, and adaptability to the coastal environment.

Natural Materials: The use of hardwood sleepers, bluestone steppers, and a large feature boulder added a natural and organic feel to the garden.

Focal Point: A stunning grass tree served as a central focal point.

  • Coastal Conditions: The design addressed the challenges of coastal environments, including salt spray, strong winds, and sandy soils, by selecting appropriate plant species and using erosion-control measures.

Integration with Architecture: The garden was carefully planned to complement the home's design, ensuring a harmonious transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Low Maintenance: The selection of native plants minimizes the need for ongoing maintenance, allowing the clients to enjoy their garden without constant upkeep.

  • The completed project transformed the property into a stunning coastal oasis. The native plants thrived, creating a vibrant and sustainable landscape. The relaxed ambiance and low-maintenance design exceeded the client's expectations, providing a peaceful and enjoyable outdoor retreat that perfectly complemented the coastal architecture of the home.

“Justin did an amazing design for our garden. He took the time to really understand the vision we had and match that to the house and surrounding area. Great selection of natives and interesting design features. We could not be any happier with the finished result.”
